On December 10, two competition robot building teams from
the Robot Club of Livingston Area Homeschoolers, "9 Girls & a Bot" and "RoboFlight" competed in Novi, Michigan along with 72 other teams at the Michigan FIRST Lego League tournament. Both teams, whose members reside in Livingston County, made strong showings at the state competition with "9 Girls & a Bot" placing 22nd in robot performance score and team RoboFlight finishing 24th in robot performance and 24th in the all around category. These 72 teams had been narrowed down from a field of 350 teams at various regional competitions held in November.
The girls team is unique in that they were the only all girls team at the state competition (as well as at the regional competitions held in November) comprised mostly of boys. The girls' robot performance score of 275 was a significant improvement over their score of 165 at the regional competition. The boys' improvements in their research project and design judging allowed them to finish 24th in the all around category. The winner of the all around category will go to Atlanta in April to compete in the international competition along with 70 teams from the United States and around the world.
